I’m Kim Fielding, and since I was a little kid I’ve wanted to be an author. How could I know when I achieved my dream? Well, for one thing, I’d have books in print. Of course, nowadays anyone can self-publish anything they want, so that wasn’t enough for me. So another indication I had mind was that I’d receive fan mail and people would ask me to sign their books. And I do and people do, and believe me when I say nothing is more thrilling than hearing from fans! Other things I wanted were to be able to look myself up on Amazon and to have a whole shelf filled with my books. I’ve achieved those things too.
Let’s see, what else? Bestseller lists? Awards? Yep! But one more thing that was really important to me was having my work translated. Just the thought that someday my stories would not only be read by people from around the world, but read in a variety of languages, was really exciting.
Which is why I am very pleased to say that my novel Brute is now available in French! Not only that, but next year it will release in Italian as well. Earlier this year, my novella Speechless came out in Spanish, and just recently The Tin Box was translated into German.
I don’t speak any of these languages. I can understand a little Spanish and a little French, in German I can recite several short dialogs we had to memorize in high school decades ago (Wo is Monika? Monika ist im boot. Warum bist du so traurig? Richard ist krank.), and all I can say in Italian is grazie and pronto. But I like to think that someday I might decide to improve my language skills, and that I’ll do so by reading the translations of my own books.
Incidentally, another sign of authorial success is having multiple books released at once, and getting to do a blog tour and contests to celebrate. So here we are!
