Sunday Snippet #21: A Purrfect Match

Jim’s ears twitched nervously. He gauged the distance between himself and the door. If I make a dash for it I could—Ah, there’s just one tiny flaw in my plan: still no cat flap.
Jim stood in the middle of Andrew’s living room, indecisiveness immobilizing him. In the end, a muffled hiccup from Andrew sealed his fate. Slowly, he walked over to Andrew. In one smooth motion he jumped up on the sofa, startling Andrew.
Wide, red-rimmed eyes stared at Jim. “Geez, way to give me a heart attack, Mr. Frosty. I thought you’d be staying with Tony.”
Jim sidled up next to Andrew and butted his head against Andrew’s flank. Andrew uncurled his legs, patted them, and Jim accepted the invitation. He circled several times, then lay down graciously.
With a bemused expression on his face, Andrew asked, “Are you done? Comfy?”
Jim purred, which elicited a chuckle from Andrew. Jim pressed his head firmly against Andrew’s belly while he kneaded Andrew’s right thigh with his forepaws. Andrew obliged and stroked Jim thoroughly.
“I’ve never heard a cat purring this loudly,” Andrew said. “Even my belly is vibrating from your purrs.”
Jim purred even louder. Andrew surprised him by bending down and rubbing his cheek against the top of his head. He actually forgot to purr for a moment. Andrew let go quickly, sighing, “All right. Not a fan of being smothered, I take it? Sorry.”
